Phil has over 25 years’ experience in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries.
A site-based engineer for the majority of his career, he has extensive experience of managing process safety on high hazard process plant and a proven track record in project management, turnaround (TAR) management, engineering and operations management, and JV/partner operations.
His career in the oil and gas industry started at Conoco’s Humber Refinery, where he spent five years, initially as a Mechanical Engineer in the refinery maintenance team, before becoming Project Manager for a major design and construction project.
Phil went on to develop a successful career with BP that spanned almost 20 years. Following five years with the company’s chemicals division in Teesside as Mechanical Engineer and Engineering Team Leader, he moved into the exploration and production division, where he held the positions of Utilities Area Engineer & ETAP Platform Turnaround Manager, and Erskine Coordinator & ELE Turnaround Manager, responsible for TARs for the Everest, Lomond and CATS riser platforms.
Phil has extensive knowledge of CATS, having spent the last 10 years of his career based in Teesside working on the asset. In 2005 he became Onshore Site Manager at the CATS terminal with responsibility for the operations, maintenance and planning team, before progressing to the role of Asset Engineering Support Team Leader, accountable for managing process safety, including management of change and site technical competency.
In 2012 he moved into a BP Senior Leader position as Discipline Engineering Manager for the UKCS midstream business, establishing and leading a multi-discipline team of professional engineers to provide support to operations at the three BP-operated UK onshore terminals (CATS, Sullom Voe, and the Forties Pipeline System), and all BP-operated pipelines, with a strong focus on process safety management, and long term risk reduction.
Phil is a graduate of the University of Southampton and holds an Honours degree in Engineering and a Master of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering.
More recently he successfully completed BP’s post-graduate Diploma in Engineering Management at the University of Manchester. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
